Removing and installing/renewing all parking brake pads

Special tools required: 34 4 000

Necessary preliminary tasks:

  • Remove  rear brake discs.

After completing repair work, adjust parking brake.

Note:

During replacement of the hand brake coverings, the following components must also be renewed:

  • Brake shoe expander
  • Adjusting screw
  • Spring set
Disconnect return springs with brake spring pliers
Disconnect return springs with brake spring pliers.Installation note:
Check recoil springs and replace if necessary.
Twist clamping pins with special tool  344000
Twist clamping pins with special tool 34 4 000 through 90° and disconnect.
Remove brake shoes.
Coat threads of bushing (1) and screw (2) with grease
Installation note:
Note installation position of adjusting screws (1) and (2).

Coat threads of bushing (1) and screw (2) with grease,
refer to Service Operating Fluids.

Removing and installing/replacing both Bowden cables for parking brake

Necessary preliminary tasks:

  • Remove expander lock for parking braking shoes
  • Lower rear axle carrier
Release screws (1) on parking brake housing cover
Release screws (1) on parking brake housing cover.
Tightening torque 34 41 3AZ.
Take off case cover.
Raise end stop (1) with screwdriver.
Raise end stop (1) with screwdriver.
Continue releasing parking brake with emergency release tool until assembly position is reached (cable pulleys rest on outer housing walls (2)).
Release grommet (1) and pull out of housing a little.
Release grommet (1) and pull out of housing a little.
Press on tabs (2) with screwdriver in order to unlock Bowden cables.
Pull Bowden cable mountings out of parking brake housing a little.
Unhook Bowden cables from cable pulleys (3).
Remove Bowden cables from below.
Pull Bowden cable (1) out of rubber retainer (2).
Pull Bowden cable (1) out of rubber retainer (2).
Tabs of gasket (1) must engage in parking brake mounting tray.
Installation note:
Tabs of gasket (1) must engage in parking brake mounting tray.
End sleeves (2) of Bowden cables must engage in parking brake housing.
Ensure flush mounting between gasket and housing.
Installation note:
Ensure flush mounting between gasket and housing.
To facilitate installation, use silicone spray (refer to Parts Service) as antiseize agent.

Adjust parking brake

Adjustment specification for brake pads
Unscrew a wheel bolt from rear wheel.
Turn wheel until tapped hole is vertically at bottom.
Turn adjusting screw (1) with a screwdriver until it is no longer possible to turn the wheel.
Then unfasten the adjusting screw 8 notches.

Engage crank and press in release screw.
Turn crank counterclockwise.
With mechanical emergency release of actuating unit, max. torque at end stop 5 Nm.
